The Nature Conservancy Blowing Rocks Preserve

October 7, 2021

Blowing Rocks Preserve is a nature preserve on Jupiter Island in Hobe Sound, Martin County, Florida. It was established in 1992. The Nature Conservancy owns the land on which it sits. In addition, it has the biggest outcropping of Anastasia limestone on the state's east coast. Breaking waves send plumes of water soaring through erosion holes; the spray may reach heights of more than 50 feet (15 m). The limestone outcrop was given its name as a result of this unique sight. In addition to coquina shells, crustaceans, and sand, the limestone outcropping contains a variety of other materials. Blowing Rocks Preserve is one of the Nature Conservancy's most cherished accomplishments, according to the organization. In addition to being a quiet barrier island refuge, it is also a nationally recognized example for large-scale native coastal ecosystem restoration. There are numerous Florida islands where the ecosystems found here are rapidly vanishing, and this unique location is home to a variety of threatened and endangered flora and animals, including the critically endangered loggerhead, green, and leatherback sea turtles.

Additionally, the preserve has various coastal ecotones, such as maritime hammocks, mangrove wetlands, and beach dunes, among other things. Sea grapes, gumbo limbo, and Sabal palms are just a few of the natural plants that may be found in abundance. Exotic plants that have become invasive are being eradicated in order to protect the local vegetation. It has an educational center, a native plant nursery, a boardwalk, an oceanside walkway, and a butterfly garden, among other features. The Hawley Education Center hosts a variety of changing natural history and art exhibitions, as well as environmental education courses and workshops for children and adults. Interpretive signage on the flora, animals, and ecology of the Indian River Lagoon may be seen along a boardwalk that runs beside the lagoon.
